Tools
There are various ways to go about this whole endeavour. The easiest way to get everything set up is to use a third party launcher, that has all the functionality you need. Technically, it is possible to do everything from the command line but I don't recommend it, because it is tedious and error-prone.
By now there are so many app/game launchers that it's not practical to maintain installation instructions for each of them. These include:
For my personal recommendation see below.
Requirements
Whatever tools you use, in order for playing Gothic you need to achieve the following:
- Setup a Wine prefix (one prefix per game/mod instance is recommended)
- Install Windows dependencies into this prefix
- Define DLL overrides
If you don't know what any of that means but would like to, go here. If you don't care, proceed to the page for the tool of your choice or directly to the installation instructions.
As long as you manage the above things, it doesn't matter how you do this. The following sections contain instructions for some GUI applications that I have personal experience with.
Recommendation
Personally, I use Lutris for everything described here. It is not necessarily the best or most pretty tool, but, to the best of my knowledge, it is the only one that has the capability of automating the game installation process via scripting which I find highly attractive (see installation instructions on this site for scripts).
If you care about this, I recommend you also use Lutris, otherwise, it really doesn't matter.
